Governor Signs Mike Fong-Supported SB 1174
Long David Liu Files Suit
David Liu Is the Only Candidate Fighting to Protect Your Vote!
My name is Long David Liu, Candidate for the 49th Assembly District, and on October 7, 2024 I filed a legal challenge against Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Robert Bonta over the Governor’s recent approval of SB 1174 which would make it illegal for local election officials to request proof of identification before casting a ballot.
There is a lot of talk about election integrity, but not much action! It’s time to walk the walk and stand up to bad laws that weaken our democracy. I’m taking this action today to protect one of our most sacred rights, the right to free and fair elections.
There is nothing more important at this time than the integrity of our elections. This action by the Governor will only fuel speculation over fraud in our in-person voting process in California. The Governor knows that the DMV registered thousands of ineligible voters. Our “honor system” for registration also allows anyone to file a registration form. Asking someone to identify themselves is the least we can do to assure our citizens that the system is secure and only those eligible are casting ballots. Many jurisdictions have implemented voter identification requirements and had no negative impact on voter participation or turnout.
I’m an attorney and I swore an oath of office to uphold the constitutions of the United States and the State of California. Governor Newsom took the same oath. Unlike the Governor, I feel compelled to take immediate action to protect the integrity of our elections. As a candidate for Assembly, I want to be confident that my own election is determined by only qualified citizens of our state.
The Governor’s action puts democracy squarely in the crosshairs of those who would undermine our freedoms. If anyone can walk into a polling location and cast a ballot without proper identification, then our whole American way of life is in jeopardy. The Governor seems to have forgotten that he declared California a sanctuary state and non-citizens are able to obtain drivers licenses, public benefits and social security numbers. What’s to stop them from voting as well?
I am seeking an injunction to prevent the enforcement of this new law and allow local election officials to take the steps necessary to assure the voting public that the November 5th election is conducted with the utmost integrity and the public can have confidence in the outcome of the balloting.
As a private citizen, I have a proven record of collaboration with local residents, businesses, news outlets and community organizations to elevate our voices, maximize our collective power and ensure that our Governor knows how the 49th really stands on these issues. In case you think our efforts are futile, just this past month, we successfully contributed to the defeat of two bills - AB 1840 and SB 277 - that would have effectively put California taxpayers, students, veterans and seniors last - proving that the 49th supports restoring common sense to Sacramento. SB 1174 is yet another BAD BILL supported by Mike Fong and he is sending more to the Governor's desk - ACA 7 and SB 94. I need you to send me to Sacramento to stop them!
I am the first and only entity of any kind in California - including national parties, state political organizations, government watchdogs, elected officials and candidates - to take BOLD and necessary action against this affront to voter confidence and integrity. Will you join my fight to protect the power of our votes?
Best regards,
Long David Liu
